Cathal what? Cathal ORegan! - Du - ~Colin Morgan Love~

Film Ireland reports from the set of Parked

Parked MovieIn issue 132 of Film Ireland Magazine, Alessandro Molatore braves the weather to report from the set of Ripple World's latest feature Parked..

Parked in Ireland’s coldest winter

During Ireland’s coldest January for 25 years the last sight local walkers expected to see was a film crew shooting in an exposed Dublin Bay car park. The four-week shoot for Parked kicked off with six days in the coastal car park in the centre of Dublin’s expansive, semicircular bay. The area is essentially industrial, dominated by the two tall chimneys of the electrical power station that are a distinctive landmark of the nation’s capital. Exposed to all of the elements – gale force onshore winds, rain and snow, sand and sleet – it makes for an inhospitable shooting environment, but one that suits the story perfectly.

Acting legend

The fiction debut of documentary director Darragh Byrne, Parked centres on Fred Daly, a man who returns to his hometown after spending many years away and has nowhere to live but the car he arrives in. Fred is played by Irish acting legend Colm Meaney. ‘Fred doesn’t like to be an outsider,’ comments Meaney. ‘He very much wants to blend in. He wants to be part of something but he is not quite sure how to do it.’ A proud man, whose life has shrunk to a series of mundane routines, Fred’s world is opened up by the arrival of Cathal, a chaotic, dope-smoking 21-year-old who also pulls up in the car park and makes it his home.

Producer Dominic Wright explains, ‘Parked reflects a very real way of life for many people. The global economic crisis means there are lot of people out there in a similar situation to Fred who find themselves suddenly with no job and no real home to speak of, looking for a way back into society. The “mobile homeless” is a very real phenomenon. Parked could be anyone’s story.’ Colm Meaney agrees, ‘This could take place anywhere. It’s a universal story. There are people living like this all over the world. I don’t think this is particularly an Irish reality.’

Directory of photography John Conroy is shooting largely handheld on a red camera with a small and agile crew. Bringing experience from films such as The Bourne Ultimatum and The Da Vinci Code to the comparatively modest Parked, John is no stranger to the varied challenges of filmmaking. Wrapped from head to toe in waterproof cold weather gear, he simply smiles and says, ‘If it wasn’t the weather it’d be something else’ before heading off to discuss the position of lights that struggle to stand firm against the high winds.

Experience

For producer Jacqueline Kerrin, the small team’s strength lies in the experience of its principals. ‘Darragh’s background as a leading Irish documentary maker and John’s experience on big-budget films makes for an efficient crew. We’ve no tracks, no cranes and just a cherry picker for high angles.’ On set it is clear that John’s experience works well to deliver Darragh’s vision. Despite the weight of the red and the high winds, John’s striking handheld movement becomes steady as a rock when required, and at other times is anchored by solid classical framing.

The car park setting and the weather suit the visual aims of the film perfectly too. Darragh Byrne notes, ‘Tonally, the car park is a cool flat space, while the action outside the car park enjoys depth and warmth.’ That warmth comes into Fred’s life when he meets Julia, played by Finnish actress Milka Ahlroth (Twisted Roots). The weather was in the crew’s favour on the days Milka was on set as (according to script) the sun came out for all of her scenes. Julia, a musician, has been living in Dublin for years and is thinking of returning home to Finland following the death of her husband. Encouraged by Cathal to overcome the shame of his situation, Fred strikes up a touching relationship with Julia.

Shooting in the comparative luxury of Julia’s Georgian villa after the hardships of the car park is as much of a pleasure for the crew as it is for the characters. Darragh is careful to clarify though, ‘The challenge is to ensure that there is an even temperament to the aesthetic of these two elements that avoids obvious visual clues. I’m looking for subtle differences in texture, a graduation in tone from the cool blues of the car park to the warm tones as Fred’s world opens up, helped by Cathal and Jules.’

Merlin Morgan

Young Irish actor Colin Morgan, who is best known for playing the quintessentially English Merlin in the bbc series, is daily transformed into Cathal, a Dublin junkie. Speaking swiftly between one scene and another, Morgan shares in the general enthusiasm. ‘We are having lots of fun during the shoot. It is intense; there are a lot of tough scenes and tough weather conditions – being in Ireland and being on the coast – but we all stick together and work hard. The script is as challenging and interesting, and it’s great to watch Colm working with a character with such deep emotions. I love Darragh’s passion towards the story, it must be incredible for him to see it all happening’.

The film, an Irish-Finnish co-production between Ripple World Pictures and Helsinki-filmi, is currently in post-production at Egg and will be coming to the big screen before too long.

导演是拍纪录片出身,这部故事片是其的首部作品;

演Fred的男主角Colm,文中用Irish acting legend形容他,估计就像地方传奇人物吧,我在一其它海报上见过他;

女主角Julia来自芬兰,怪不得是爱尔兰和芬兰合作拍摄的电影;
